This Garlic Ginger Sautéed Broccolini recipe is insanely addicting! Tossed in sesame oil, the broccolini is crisp and tasty with only 6 ingredients and 8 minutes of cook time. This will easily become your go-to side for any Asian-inspired mains.

Sautéed broccolini is a great alternative to the roasted broccoli you’re used to. It has a longer stem and loser florets with a bit of a bitter peppery flavor. This all works super well sautéd in a pan with sesame oil, garlic, and ginger! Though broccolini is typically cooked up with olive oil, garlic, parmesan, and lemon, I think you’ll love the garlic ginger spin I have going on here.

  • Sesame oil—You can use regular sesame oil or toasted sesame oil. Toasted sesame oil has a deeper, richer nutty flavor where as regular sesame oil is more mild. Both are great, so it just really depends on your preference. You could also use a spicy sesame oil if you like a little kick.
  • Sesame seeds—You can toast the sesame seeds prior to tossing them into your finished broccoli for a nuttier toasted flavor, or just leave them raw.

Recipe Variations & Modifications

  • Oil—You can use olive oil in place of sesame if you prefer to not have the sesame flavor. You’ll still get that lovely garlic ginger flavor in!
  • Butter—Feel free to add a knob or two of butter to the pan along with the oil for a rich and smooth touch.
  • Broth—If you have an open box of broth kicking around in your fridge, you can use 2 TBSP of that in place of the water for steaming the broccolini.
  • Onions—Adding 1/2 cup of finely diced onion is a welcomed addition to this recipe. Just start by sautéing the onions first for about 3-5 minutes, then proceeding with the garlic and ginger, and so on.

Cooking Tip

Trim the woody/tough ends of the broccoli stems by 1/2 an inch. Some broccolini stalks will be thicker than others, so in this case, slice thicker broccolini in half lengthwise. This will help ensure an even cook on all of the broccolini.

How to Make Sautéed Broccolini

Step 1. Heat the oil in a sauté pan or wok over medium heat. Add the garlic and ginger and simmer for 30 seconds.

Step 2. Add the broccolini to the pan with a pinch of salt, just for seasoning, and toss to coat. Let the broccolini simmer for about 2 minutes.

Step 3. Add a splash of water to the pan (about 2 TBSP). Cover the pan, reduce the heat to medium-low, and simmer for 3-5 minutes or until the broccolini is bright green and more tender, but still has a crispy stalk.

Step 4. Transfer the broccolini to a serving platter and drizzle any pan sauce and garlic bits on top. Garnish with sesame seeds and enjoy!

How to Serve Garlic Ginger Sautéed Broccolini

This sautéd broccolini offers up servings for between 2-4 people, depending on what you’re serving it with. Storage & Reheating

  1. Leftovers will keep in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 3-4 days.
  2. To reheat sautéed broccolini, you can either transfer them to a microwave-safe plate and heat in increments of 15 seconds until heated through, or toss them into a pan and reheat over medium-low heat until warmed through.

Both greens are incredibly nutritious, but broccolini does pack a bigger punch with four times the amount of vitamin A thank broccoli. It also offers up a little more manganese, phosphorus, and calcium.

How much stem do you cut off of broccolini?

Only about a half of an inch needs to be trimmed off of broccolini stalks.

Are the little flowers on broccolini edible?

Yes! The little flowers mean the broccolini is a little old, but not bad. It’s safe to eat as long as there aren’t any signs of the broccolini rotting or being rank.

Ingredients 

  • 1 bunch of broccoli (8 oz, give or take)
  • 1-2 TBSP sesame oil
  • 2-3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tsp freshly grated ginger
