This sweet and salty Hawaiian Pizza with Crispy Prosciutto is a perfect way to amp things up on pizza night!

Cut up slices of Hawaiian pizza on cast iron pizza pan.

Pineapple on pizza gets a lot of hate and we’ll never understand why. Since when is adding a bit of sweet to your salty a bad thing? We’ll admit, it took us a while to muster up the courage to bring pineapple pizza to the blog due to the animosity towards it. But this Hawaiian pizza offers up salty crispy prosciutto with its bursts of sweet juicy pineapple and—honestly—we’re not sorry about it!

What is Hawaiian pizza?

Tomato sauce, cheese, pineapples, and ham; sometimes bacon. That’s all it takes to make a “traditional” Hawaiian pizza. But it’s worth noting that, despite its name, this pie has nothing to do with Hawaii itself, minus the pineapple. We recently learned that this concept originated in Chatham, Ontario—by a Greek fella!—and was inspired in part by his experience in preparing Chinese dishes, which often blend the sweet with the savory. Think: plum sauce, sweet and sour sauce, etc.

We brought some Italian influence back to pizza here by swapping the usual ham for prosciutto and it was a hit. Not only is prosciutto wonderfully salty, but it crisps up in the oven offering a crunchy bite to go with those juicy bursts of pineapple. Seriously, WHO WOULDN’T WANT THIS.

But, to each their own. All we’re saying is if you’re down with delicious combos, you need to make this pizza pronto.

How to make Hawaiian pizza with crispy prosciutto.

Risen dough in mixing bowl.

Hawaiian pizza on cast iron pan, uncooked.

This is one of the quickest and easiest pizzas we make in this house, yet it packs SO much flavor. The ingredient list is short.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Fresh pizza dough, or a premade shell
  • Tomato sauce
  • Shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Fresh pineapple
  • Thinly sliced prosciutto
  • Chili flakes (optional)

Here’s what you’ll do:

Preheat the oven according to your dough recipe or the instructions for your premade shell.

Spread your dough out onto a lightly oiled pizza pan.

Evenly top the dough with tomato sauce and shredded cheese, then distribute the chopped pineapple over the cheese. Add the thin slices of prosciutto; keep the slices long and simply drop them in one spot, folding them over themselves.

Bake in the oven for about 12-15 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese has fully melted.

Remove from oven and let it stand for 5 minutes, then dig in!

And if you’re looking for a great side salad, we’ve got that covered.

Equipment

  • Pizza pan

Ingredients

The dough.

  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 4 tsp yeast
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • 1/2 tsp sugar
  • 1 cup warm water

Hawaiian Pizza with Crispy Prosciutto.

  • 1 cup marinara
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella
  • 1 cup thinly sliced chunks of fresh pineapple, more if desired
  • 3 oz thinly sliced prosciutto
  • Dried chili flakes (optional)

Instructions

The Dough.

  • Place the flour, yeast, salt, and sugar into a large mixing bowl; whisk to combine the ingredients.
  • Set and lock the mixing bowl to the mixer. Attach the dough hook and turn the mixer on low. Slowly add the warm water and let the dough mix for about a minute, or until a nice ball of dough has formed. (Note: You can knead this dough by hand on a lightly floured surface, it will just take a bit longer to form.)
  • Place the dough ball in a large, lightly oiled bowl. Cover it tightly with plastic wrap, and let it sit for an hour.

Hawaiian Pizza with Crispy Prosciutto.

  • Preheat the oven to 450ยบ F.
  • Lightly oil your pizza pan. Transfer the dough out onto it, and work the dough up to the edges of the pan until your pizza dough is fully formed. Spoon the marinara over the center of the pizza and evenly spread it out, leaving about 1/2-1 inch of room for a crust to form. Evenly sprinkle the shredded cheese over the marinara, then top the cheese with chunks of pineapple and prosciutto.
  • Bake the pizza for 12-15 minutes, or until the crust is golden in color. Remove the pizza from the oven and let it sit for about 5 minutes before cutting into it. Garnish with dried chili flakes if you'd like a bit of heat with your salty and sweet, and enjoy!
