My favorite thing about this sangria is how light and rejuvenating it is—and it isn’t overly sugary! It has the perfect balance of summer fruitiness, freshness, and sweetness with a bit of effervescence, thanks to the prosecco.

- Tequila — I use tequila blanco for it’s bright crisp notes, which makes it a great pairing for the other flavors here. But you could use reposado or añejo, which have deeper, richer flavors due to being aged.
- Watermelon — I highly recommend going through the entire process of running the purée through a sieve after blending. That way you get a smooth beverage with no pulpiness or strange texture.

- Swap your citrus — You could use lemons in this recipe, or even oranges!
- Different herbs — If you don’t fancy mint, basil is a great way to add an herbaceous flare. Or you could omit the herbs all together.
- Make it a mocktail — This concoction is also enjoyable without the booze, and kids love it! Just add a litre of seltzer water (plain or fruity works) instead of prosecco, and omit the tequila.
How to Make Watermelon Sangria With Prosecco
Step 1. Start by place the cubed watermelon into a high-powered blender. (Fill it to about 1/2 or 2/3 of the way to the top; do it in batches if necessary).
Step 2. Blend until smooth. It will be foamy—that’s normal.
Step 3. Set up a large punch bowl or mixing bowl and pour the watermelon purée into it through a sieve. Using the back of a soup spoon or spatula, gently stir the liquid through the sieve to help it through. Discard the pulp. Continue steps 1-3 in batches until you’ve puréed all of the watermelon.
Step 4. Whisk the simple syrup into the watermelon followed by the tequila and the prosecco.
Step 5. Place the limes and mint sprigs into a pitcher of ice, and pour the watermelon sangria into the pitcher.
To serve: Serve over ice with extra lime slices or wedges and fresh mint!
Pro Tip
If you want to save yourself some time, you can purée the watermelon a day in advance and keep it in the fridge until you’re ready to make your batch of sangria!

You’re going to want some food to go with this drink! It’s great for a summery taco night with some grilled Mahi Mahi fish tacos or shrimp tacos with mango habanero salsa. You could also enjoy with with these salmon kebabs and honestly, they’re great with a juicy turkey burger too. For pool time snacking, sip it while munching on this taco dip with cream cheese.
Storage
- This sangria is best enjoyed the day of, but you can get away with having leftover the next day if it’s kept in a pitcher with a lid.
